Super Urban Exploring!

Welcome back!   I have many new ideas and posts in the works for this very page.  As I have said before- as our bank account grows--so will the adventures I tell about!  All across this great state.  Hopefully soon turning into full weekend trips very soon.  This weekend the kids and I plan to Explore up by the caves again  this time going when the huge visitors center is actually open.  And I hope to be on a mini Exploring trip tomorrow, after business of course.   Both will make picture filled blog posts very soon in our future.  Please share this link -it greatly needs more readers!   Today I wish to talk about what I call super urban Exploring.  This post took a long time in the making, because the pictures I wanted to use were on several computers.  I have written on this topic before in my Exploring Bellingham Washington pages.  Quick hikes starting from just behind big stores and such that could become very enjoyable.  Benson Arizona is a much smaller town, but such hikes fill the area.   Arizona is really great with pets, because with a very short drive in any direction, you can find yourself surrounded by desert and all it offers to Explore.   Much of it very beautiful.   I attempt to pick a different spot to pull over and roam each time.  Below is a sample of such areas found very close to town.

Extra large ant hill
I do not know about around here, but were I grew up
you can often find Indian beads in ant hills.
Because the ants do not know them from sand or pebbles.

But first a quick warning, or two!   First as always in the desert take lots of water.  Extra if you are roaming with pets and or kids.  Even though all of these areas are very close to town, it is easy to keep Exploring and soon be very far away from your vehicle.  It is much cooler outside now, but that full on sunshine over your head can still be dangerous.  Also the temperatures are dipping close to freezing levels at night now, so if you are a night adventure, but not used to the colder temps- be sure to dress in layers.   Lastly coyotes and such are getting very bold this year.  Two weeks ago we encountered three dead, mostly eatin' dogs in an area greatly inside Benson city limits.  We are not sure what got to the animals, and were not planning on sticking around long enough to find out.  The desert is great to Explore, but is also full of dangers.  Always be very aware of your surroundings on any hike.   That said   on to some pictures!!

Just past the railroad tracks, the highway overpass and the two motels is a lot of open desert to Explore.   This is also were we found the dead dogs and have spotted several wild pigs.    Above is Butch's first hike in the area.

Every size, shape, and type of cactus can be found on a long enough hike.

On the same road---closer to town we parked in the old -closed down fast food joints parking lot and Explored.

On this day I had the two boys
and our Husky

By the rail road tracks.

Some old buildings to Explore.
But people camp out in these --so be careful

Make your mark!

I have talked before about the rolling hills to Explore just beyond the city pool.
Near the High Street cemetery is many miles of such areas to roam.

The view from up here is great also.

Roaming around the other cemetery

A few days back we followed Mark Street to the dead end and found some more trails.

Looking out from the top of the hills off Mark Street.

There is even a BBQ, bench, and table in the area, but you
have to cross into private property.
This also gives a view of the gas pipelines over the San Pedro River.
                                                       Another place to roam.

I do not have any pictures but if you park at the bowling alley ---and hike up that hill, you have a great view of the entire town and area!  I am not sure -as in many of these areas --if the owners encourage Exploring.  But I have found if I have a kid or two with me, not to many people say anything.   I also have learned with the new dog----a pit bull, no one stops to ask me anything.

Behind the college also allows for some interesting trails and views.

We also found this great spot for some King Of The Hill!

This particular trip was cut short, when these clouds started to circle.
None produced rain that day, but we still made a V-line for the house, just in case.

I personally believe this is a great place to Explore!   Many of the buildings are open.
I have more pictures from here in a past blog post.   Many people to crash here at night so watch              when you visit and watch your step.

On this night we had hours of fun slugging golf balls into the desert.

This area in around the usually empty San Pedro River is another great
place to Explore.

And of course downtown and around the visitors center offer many great sights
in a paved environment.

Nothing Beats A Back Road.

Good morning readers!!   Yesterday I had the joy of taking all three kiddos to the dreaded dentist.   Actually I do not think it would have been as bad, if the trip had not been so close to Halloween.  And it was super nice that they made all three appointments at the same time, and in our town!  The kids got out of school early for the "fun" and mom works out of her office in our bedroom.   So to keep it quiet at home and make up for the dentist trip--we grabbed some snacks, water, and Mr Butch--*our newly adopted dog,  and headed off to Explore.   Of course I had time to snap some pictures along the way.  ;)  We headed down fourth street--away from the evil dentist and Wal-Mart to the end of the road.   This seems to be a very popular drinking area--so I would not advice showing up here later at night.  Unless you like to drink adult beverages with underage students.  But hey--everyone needs to have a hobby.  Just to the right of the dead end signs is a gate leading to the open fields and Exploring.

Before I really get into this blog post--the answer to where we were Exploring earlier in the week.  I again received no guesses, but if you live in Benson you probably recognized the area.   There are lots of ways to contact me.   But the fastest is at my highly un-popular Facebook page.  The link can be found at the bottom of this very blog post!  If this section gets more popular-- I will start giving prizes for the first correct answer!

At any rate the boys and I went all the way up the hill Ocotillo Road,  and went right.   Exploring with the college just in view.   More on this trip in my next blog post---all about quick local Exploring.  This page is an new up start for sure, so please share the page if you enjoy what you see here!

In the heart of wonderful Benson, Arizona!
We want to be one of the first to fully welcome ALL of
the great snowbirds to the area--ALL who make for a great
                                                                                       Arizona winter time!!

I am not sure why there are so many fake cactus around the desert.  Since you can find real ones of every size and shape.    But these ones right off of Fourth Street make for a great picture.  Pause for a few minutes and you can snap a picture with a train in the background.  Now back to today's blog post.

Heading out Fourth Street -just past the intersection you see this great row of trees---all slowly gaining there fall beauty.

Both are always ready to find a new trail!

Yet another train rolls into the distance just past our hike.  Right after this it disappears behind the hills we were Exploring.

From a distance --again the clouds were wonderful this day.

This area offers lots of climbing and losing of your footing.
Butch was right behind us every step of the way.

Even from a distance we could spot something at the top of this formation.

And this was what we found at the top.   As many times is the case--I am not sure of the story for this at all, but it was great fun to make up our own reasons for this statue to be up on the high perch.   He would have an amazing few if only he had a head.

In one of the water run-offs the boys found the remains of an old truck.  This called for a perfect photo opp.

                                                       As Always

                                        **HAPPY TRAILS!!**

Roper Lake State Park

I am sitting here full of beloved coffee-staring at the clouds.  Something we were VERY used to in Washington state.   The boys and I wish to go Exploring this afternoon, and I figure by the time I finish this post it will either be back to full on sunshine or pouring rain.  This is a very new page---so please help me spread the word, if you enjoy what you see here.  Most of the Exploring is based out of our new home town--the Wonderful Benson, Arizona.   But as our savings account grows--- the adventures will get better!   Hopefully turning into weekend Exploring trips for our whole family.

B is for Benson

A few weeks ago our oldest and I ventured to the Safford area on a business trip.  We had never been to this area, so we allowed plenty of time to Explore also.   Three towns are nestled very close to each other, and as here--surrounded by mountains.  I use the words "mountains" loosely, because I grew up with the Rocky  Mountains basically in my back yard.   Lots of shopping can be found in this area.   I do not piratically like shopping, but since Benson basically has Safeway and Wal Mart-- it is nice to be any were with selection.

Rocky Mountains
Sheridan, Wyoming

I am always a sucker for old buildings were ever my roaming might take me.

Especially for old barns.  I might have jumped a few fences to snap this picture.  I have many pictures of old barns across the country.

The size of this cactus is amazing.  Especially considering how long it takes to grow this big.  I was very sad to see many of these ruined around Tucson by becoming the backdrop for crummy spray paint "art."

We soon ended up in Roper Lake State Park.  And were very pleased to see lots of water in the lake.  Although we soon found out with the heavy breeze--it was quite chilly.  The best way to get into any water is to just jump in and face the shock right away.   Luckily this is Arizona, and soon after exiting the lake, we were nice and warm again.  Quickly almost to warm.

Many covered benches fill the island--shaded by huge palm trees.   There is even a few places to shower off outside after being in the lake water.   Very adequate restrooms are also easily found.   This park has a lot to offer---plus another state park is just behind it.   Roper state park has 400 acres to roam.  There is also lots of camping sights and a few boat docks.

There is also a small hot tub for visitors.
But on this day it was much to warm for that fun.

                                                         Near the pet walking area.

We soon found a few trails to Explore.   But they were not very interesting at all to either of us.

As most state parks---it costs $6.00 for a day pass.  But here you get a discount on your next park trip.  There is also of course a visitors center to Explore.   This one is neat, but very small.

The visitors center is also were I snapped this picture of a front license plate --I now use on many of my blogs and ads.
